Burberry, the iconic UK-based fashion brand, adds two new emissions-based climate goals. This is been considered as a part of brand’s 2022 responsibility strategy.
So what are these 2 goals? The goals approved by the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) are as follows:
- Reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions 95 per cent by 2022
- Reduce absolute scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions 30 per cent by 2030
Goal 1 focuses on emissions from company’s direct operations, which includes consumption of electricity and gas at offices, stores and production sites and is consistent with Paris Agreement’s goal of restricting the global temperature increase to 1.5℃.
Goal 2 aims at indirect emissions, especially the impact from the sourcing of raw materials and manufacturing of finished goods.
The two new climate goals could enable Burberry achieve the target of going ‘carbon neutral’ in its operational energy use by 2022. Interestingly, the brand has attained this already in Americas region, EMEIA retail stores and its UK operations.
It is worth noting that during 2018-2019, Burberry achieved a 43 per cent reduction in market-based emissions compared to 2016-2017.
