The Conscious Consumers Society or CCS, which is a consumer rights group in Bangladesh, has recently issued the concerned authorities with a legal notice seeking refund of money to e-commerce customers that are stuck in the payment gateways even as Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Sabrina Zarin, on behalf of CCS, served the same, which made 10 top officials of seven organisations and institutions including the central bank (Bangladesh Bank) and the Commerce Ministry the respondents.
As per reports, which cited CCS Executive Director Palash Mahmud, money of thousands of customers are, reportedly, stuck in escrow systems even as the CCS notice asked authorities concerned — the CCS notice made the General Manager of the Payment System Department of the central bank, the Commerce Secretary, Governor of the Bangladesh Bank and the Director-General of the WTO cell of the Commerce Ministry, Chief Executive Officers of mobile financial service provider bKash and Nagad, payment gateway SSL Wireless, Foster Pay and Surjo Pay — to explain within a week why the buyers’ money, stuck in payment gateways, will not be returned to them while it also sought to explain why the escrow system introduced by the central bank, will not be amended to establish a permanent system of automatically refunding customers.
Meanwhile, speaking to the media, Sabrina Zarin, reportedly, stated that legal steps were being taken to resolve the issues, while, reportedly, adding if the legal notice proves unfruitful, CCS will go to the court.
