PVH Corp., the clothing retailer based in the US, has announced the shutting down of its manufacturing unit in Ethiopia.
The retail bigwig has attributed the closure to Ethiopian Government’s ongoing conflict with forces aligned with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front. The unit will officially shut down on 25 November 2021.
This is not the first time the unit has been battling a crisis. Back in 2019, the manufacturing unit faced a probe after it was revealed that workers were being paid as little as 12 cents per hour.
Notably, following the sale of its Heritage Brands portfolio PVH was working on transferring the facility to a partner in Ethiopia. However, the conflict between the Government and the Tigray People’s Liberation front has drastically changed the political climate.
Founded in 1881, PVH Corp. owns brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Warner’s, Olga and True & Co. It generated US $ 7.1 billion in 2020.
