Leading e-retailer Amazon has announced to open its first distribution centre in Eastern Washington. The online retail behemoth is building a 6,00,000-square-foot warehouse in Spokane.
Notably, the new warehouse will provide around 1,500 job opportunities to the people in this region, as soon it starts operating in 2019. In a bid to save time, cut the cost of supplying orders online and further strengthen the retailer’s edge over brick-and-mortar retailers, the company has installed over two dozen warehouses in the last two years.
The e-retail giant has invested US $ 37 billion into its home state since 2011, that includes the transformation of infrastructure and employee compensation. It provides employment to 50,000 people across the region in its Seattle HQ campus and fulfilment centres.
Lauren Lynch, an Amazon spokesperson elucidated on the development and said that the new warehouse will be like the ones the retailer has recently set-up. “The new facility will bring in Amazon robotics: the squat, orange, self-driving units into work, that will take tightly packed shelves of items to the waiting human workers. The building will be packed with four levels of robotics-assisted storage and processing,” she added.
Additionally, Amazon’s distribution centres are a major part of its supply and delivery strategy. Amazon recently went a step further, announcing a new program in June to assist entrepreneurs start and operate their own delivery dealings in typical blue Prime-branded shirts and vans.
Interestingly, the US-based e-commerce giant recently announced that it will open its 8th warehouse in Canada and that move will provide over 6,00 jobs in the region. This step by Amazon is being welcomed by the majority of the countries, as the retailer is providing job opportunities wherever it is going.
