Online shopping has become an essential during the pandemic and Amazon plans to spread its reach as far as possible.
In order to capture Nordic region’s biggest economy, Amazon.com has started preparations to launch operations in Sweden.
Although Swedish customers can presently shop online through the online giant’s other European counterparts, the shipping of parcels across borders generally warrants higher delivery charges deterring shoppers from opting for Amazon’s services.
An official date for the launch of the website has not been announced and the amazon.se site is still redirecting customers to the amazon.de site with an option for delivery in Sweden.
A local newspaper reported a warehouse being built outside Stockholm, but the company has not confirmed whether they plan to establish a distribution hub or warehouse in the country.
The entry of Amazon in the country would have adverse effects on local players like ClasOhlson, fashion retailer Boost AB and e-books seller Storytel, who have already experienced slight lowering of share prices ever since Amazon’s announcement.
Speaking on the move to Sweden, Alex Ootes, Vice President of EU Expansion at Amazon commented “We are optimistic that, by focusing on the things we believe customers will place the greatest emphasis on – low prices, a wide range and fast deliveries – we will eventually be able to win the trust of Swedish customers.”
