Amazon’s warehouse and transportation workers are set to receive an increased average starting pay of more than US $ 19 per hour from US $ 18.
The hike will enable the online retailer attract and retain workers at a time when the US labour market is struggling.
The world’s largest e-tailer said the hike would cost the company around US $ 1 billion over the next year.
The e-tailer added that the employees will now be able to earn between US $ 16 and US $ 26 every hour depending on their position and location in the US.
The minimum wage at the e-tailer, however, remains US $ 15.
On technology front, Amazon recently announced new devices that included a lineup of voice-controlled devices and an updated e-reader which users can write on.
Besides, it announced a contactless gadget that can monitor people’s sleep.
