
The Tamil Nadu Government has set a target of building a Rs 10,000 crore (US 1,055 million) technical textile industry by 2030, with a focus on attracting investments from the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector, according to T.N. Venkatesh, Principal Secretary, Department of Handlooms, Textiles, Khadi and Handicrafts.
Speaking at the inauguration of a conference on technical textiles organised by the Department in Coimbatore, Venkatesh stated that the State would promote the production of functional textiles for sectors such as automobiles, healthcare, sports, agriculture, and construction.
During the event, industries signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the State government, committing investments worth Rs 123 crore (US $1.3 billion). The proposed manufacturing units are expected to be commissioned by the end of this year.
The Principal Secretary also announced that at least five new technical textile manufacturing units will be established across the State’s four major regions over the next three years. In addition, Tamil Nadu will soon set up a Centre of Excellence for athleisure (sports-related) products.
Venkatesh noted that Tamil Nadu’s annual textile exports currently stand at US $8 billion, while the Centre has set a target of increasing exports to US $21 billion.
