Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) senior vice president J Raghunath stated that Surat, the Indian textile centre, has a great potential to seize as the use of man-made fabrics is expected to rise by 30 million metric tonnes by 2030. On Friday, the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) hosted the inaugural Yarn Expo 2024 event in Sarsana’s SIECC where Raghunath gave a speech.
According to Raghunath, Surat’s textile sector is essential to the growth of India’s textile industry, and Surat will be the catalyst for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of an independent India. According to him, India possesses the greatest talent and technology for producing goods targeted towards export.
He gave the entrepreneurs a brief overview of the global textile industry, pointing them that the 104 million metric tonnes of textiles consumed worldwide are expected to rise by an additional 30 million metric tonnes by 2030. Currently at 78 million metric tonnes, the share of man-made fibre is expected to rise to 106 million metric tonnes.
When it comes to synthetic fabric, the amount of polyester used is currently 58 million metric tonnes and is projected to reach 81 million metric tonnes. However, among other man-made fabrics, viscose and nylon have a 20–50 million metric tonne development potential.
By 2030, the world’s annual per capita consumption of textiles is expected to rise from 14.3 kg to 16.6 kg. In India, each person consumes 6 kg of textiles annually. Nonetheless, Surat brand creation will be required of textile entrepreneurs. He went on to say that man-made cloth will eventually have to be used by the textile industry.
The chairman of Yarn Expo 2024, Girdhargopal Mundada, stated that 1.5 lakh metric tonnes of polyester yarn are consumed in Surat each month. Three thousand metric tonnes of cotton are consumed each month. In 2009, there were 3000 metric tonnes of nylon yarn consumed; by 2024, there will be 9000 metric tonnes. Each month, one thousand metric tonnes of viscose filament are consumed. The previous year, yarn worth Rs. 1900 crore was exported from Surat.
