Union Minister Giriraj Singh has said that the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) has been requested to select one district per state to carry out cotton production trials. The textiles minister told reporters that the Government is stepping up efforts to increase cotton productivity by implementing global best practices. This is because countries like Brazil, China, Australia, and Russia produce 2,000 to 2,200 kg of cotton per hectare, while India produces an average of 450 to 500 kg.
Additionally, he revealed ambitions to increase the size of India’s textiles business from its current size of US $ 176 billion to US $ 350 billion by 2030. He added that a goal has been set to increase the number of textile jobs from the current 4.5 crore to 6 crore.
The budget has allotted US $ 610 million (Rs 5,300 crore) for the textile industry, said the Minister. The textile industry will grow exports and create more jobs in the days ahead. The Minister also seemed certain that by 2026, India would be producing carbon fibre, a sophisticated fibre used in drones, missiles, and other devices.
