Puducherry Home Minister A. Namassivayam told the Assembly on Thursday 20th March 2025 that the Puducherry administration is looking into ways to build an IT park and a textile-related sector on the site of the now-defunct Anglo French Textiles in the town.
In response to a query posed by A.B. Ashok Babu, nominated legislator belonging to BJP, the Minister stated that the Government aimed to build an IT park on the site of the former mill as soon as possible. However, Namassivayam, who also oversees the Industry portfolio, stated that the Lieutenant Governor wanted the Government to look into the idea of establishing a textile industrial unit because the Union Territory has a long history of textile mills.
The Government had asked the South India Textile Research Association (SITRA) to carry out a study because of the Lt. Governor’s interest in reviving the textile sector. According to him, SITRA was now presenting a report on the viability of reopening the mills.
The AFT area has enough land to establish both an IT park and an apparel manufacturing facility, according to the Minister, who added that a portion of the land has already been set aside for the PM-Ekta Mall project.
