The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has decided not to reopen factories from Tuesday as their management wants to observe the situation further for the change in the political situation.
The BGMEA decided at an emergency meeting held at its office in Dhaka.
In a statement, the BGMEA stated that, given the current scenario, the trade group has urged factory owners not to reopen their units until further notice.
Earlier on Sunday, the BGMEA issued a statement instructing industrial owners to announce the shutdown of their facilities for an indefinite period due to the political turmoil.
They announced the plant closure as the previous government declared a three-day general public holiday in response to the nationwide student protest.
During the first wave of the crisis, garment factories and textile mills announced the stoppage of their operations for four days. Because of the violence, exporters were unable to move goods from ports or continue production in factories.
With Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, they expect their business to thrive as a conducive environment is restored.
A BGMEA leader, who requested anonymity, stated that they are taking extra time to reopen their factories because they believe there may be unpleasant happenings in the garment sector as a result of the current scenario.
