In a bid to strengthen the ready-made garment sector under the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme, construction is under way on a flatted factory in the Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority (GIDA) area. The multi-storey complex, designed as a ground-plus-three-floor facility, will house 80 fully equipped flats for garment units.
The plug-and-play design will allow entrepreneurs to begin operations immediately with only machinery and raw materials, while the 30,000-square-metre site will also feature an exhibition hall to display products, a marketing outlet, space for employees’ children, fire-fighting systems and dedicated lifts.
The Rs. 42.36 crore (US $ 4.79 million) project is expected to generate direct and indirect employment for around 2,000 people. RN Singh, President of the Chamber of Industries, said that 80% of the units would be reserved for garment businesses, while the remaining 20 per cent would be made available to other entrepreneurs.
The initiative, approved by the Ministry of MSME two years ago, complements the development of a garment park already under way in Gorakhpur. Together, the projects are seen as positioning the city to emerge as a significant hub for India’s ready-made garment industry.
