
KEMI, the Swedish chemicals agency has called for more research into the presence of potentially harmful chemical substances in textiles, and broader, and more far-reaching regulation of chemicals. The report from KEMI also raises concerns about the growing use of biocide-treated textile products, suggesting the “development of bacterial resistance to antibiotics is a very serious issue for human health.” The study has revealed that to produce one kilogram of material for t-shirts, about 3 kg of chemicals are needed and some chemicals are retained in the final product, which may prove hazardous to the wearer.
