A prominent delegation from the American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) and the Fair Labor Association (FLA) met with representatives of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) to discuss critical issues concerning workers’ rights in the country’s readymade garment (RMG) sector.
The BGMEA’s statement indicated that the purpose of the visit was to strengthen US-Bangladesh partnerships within the RMG industry. The meeting was led by BGMEA Administrator Anwar Hossain and included members of the BGMEA Support Committee—Miran Ali, Asif Ashraf, Rezwan Selim, ANM Saifuddin, Shehabudduza Chowdhury, and Shams Mahmud.
During the discussions, both parties emphasised the importance of fostering a sustainable and ethical RMG industry in Bangladesh while enhancing trade relations with the US. Key topics included workers’ rights, workplace safety, and necessary labor law reforms in Bangladesh.
The delegation highlighted opportunities for cooperation in various areas, such as improving trade access for Bangladeshi apparel in the US market and encouraging responsible purchasing practices. They also noted the industry’s significant advancements in sustainability efforts.
Additionally, the delegation explored potential collaborations aimed at enhancing workers’ training programs and overall welfare in the RMG sector. The BGMEA urged the AAFA, which represents over 1,000 well-known brands and retailers, to advocate for responsible purchasing practices that would benefit both buyers and suppliers.
Furthermore, the BGMEA requested support from the AAFA in promoting Bangladesh’s trade interests within the US market, ensuring ongoing growth and mutual benefits for both nations. The delegation acknowledged the progress Bangladesh has made in workers’ rights, particularly through the Government’s establishment of a labor reform commission and recent labor law changes.
Members of the delegation included notable figures such as Nate Herman, Senior Vice President – Policy at AAFA; Shelly Han, Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff at FLA; and representatives from leading companies like Columbia Sportswear, Puma, and PVH.
