In a new initiative aimed at supporting low-income households, the government has announced plans to sell subsidised products from the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) to an additional 1 million garment workers’ families. This decision expands upon the existing TCB family card program, which currently serves 10 million families.
The Economic Affairs Advisory Council granted in-principle approval for the initiative, which was discussed at a recent meeting chaired by Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed. The proposal, which was put forth in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce and following a request from the Ministry of Labour and Employment, aims to aid garment workers financially during challenging times.
Dr. Ahmed explained that TCB would implement the program, which is set to launch with the next sales cycle. The initial distribution will focus on regions near Dhaka, including Tongi, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Ashulia, and Savar.
Currently, TCB provides subsidised essentials such as edible oil, lentils, and sugar to 10 million families through family cards. In addition, the Food Department is distributing 5 kg of rice to each of these families to alleviate financial burdens on low-income households.
The Government’s plan to extend TCB products to garment workers is projected to cost around Taka 31.36 crore per month, covering the provision of essentials like sugar, edible oil, and lentils. To administer this program effectively, the Food Department will also require an estimated 5,000 metric tonnes of rice monthly.
This initiative is part of the Government’s ongoing efforts to ensure the accessibility of essential commodities for vulnerable populations in the country.
