Hundreds of garment workers on Monday mobilised in protest against the decision by Crony Tex Sweater Ltd., to lay off employees in its sweater division.
This is according to media reports, which added the company cited a decrease in work orders from international buyers as the primary reason for the lay-offs.
The demonstration unfolded on the Dhaka-Munshiganj road in the morning, prompted by a notice displayed outside the factory situated in the BSCIC Industrial Estate in the Fatullah area.
According to the notice, the global economic crisis affecting Bangladesh necessitated a temporary suspension of operations in the company’s sweater division even as insufficient orders from buyers made it impossible to sustain factory activities.
The notice further reportedly stated, “As a result, the sweater division is undergoing a lay-off effective from 24th December, in compliance with the Bangladesh Labour Act, until new work orders are secured.”
However, the lay-offs, as per the notice’s concluding section, will extend until 7th February, with all affected workers receiving compensation in accordance with labour laws.
