On 10th July (Monday), the Appellate Division issued a six-month stay on a High Court verdict that had granted bail to Sohel Rana, the owner of the ill-fated Rana Plaza, in a murder case.
This is as per reports, which added the order was passed by a three-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique.
It may be mentioned here on 6th April, the High Court had granted bail to Sohel Rana, but the state counsel later filed a petition challenging the legality of this decision.
Previously, on 1st March of the previous year, the High Court had issued a rule questioning why Sohel Rana, the owner of the building, should not be granted bail in connection with the murder case related to the collapse of Rana Plaza and the resulting deaths of the workers.
The Rana Plaza tragedy occurred on 24th April 2013, near Savar bus stand, claiming the lives of 1,136 readymade garment workers and leaving many others injured.
Sohel Rana was arrested five days later on 29th April, from Benapole in Jashore, as he allegedly attempted to flee to India.
