Bangladesh’s apex garment makers’ body, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has called upon the Government to reduce import duties on solar PV system accessories.
This is as per media reports, which underlined the garment makers’ body made this call with the view to help the garment makers lower energy expenses at their respective manufacturing units by installing solar systems.
The President of the BGMEA, Faruque Hassan, in a letter written to the Finance Minister to this end, reportedly urged him to reduce the Total Tax Incidence (TTI) from its current rate (which can be as high as 58%) to just 1 per cent.
The garment makers’ body reportedly sought the duty cut for solar panels, walkways, fuel save controllers, inverters, aluminium structures and other accessories.
Power tariffs rising continuously in tandem with an increasing focus on sustainable sources of energy are leading more and garment makers to make use of solar energy.
