In response to the Assembly’s discussion on grant requests, Tamil Nadu Handlooms and Textiles Minister R Gandhi declared that a handloom silk park would be built in Arani. A weaver’s induction and entrepreneurship programme will be conducted at a cost of Rs 1.4 crore in an effort to attract young people to work in the handloom industry.
According to the Minister, a Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi Centenary Memorial Handloom Silk Park will be built at Periyanna Nallur, close to Arani, and it will provide employment for about 10,000 local weavers of handicrafts as well as draw young people to the industry.
He also said that the basic salary of cooperative society weavers will increase by 10 per cent, and that the Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society’s members would receive Rs. 5,000 instead of Rs. 2,000 in funeral assistance.
A special medical camp will be held in places where there are a lot of handloom weavers to ensure the maintenance of their health. Toda Embroidered Weavers Cooperative Production & Sales Society will be founded for the benefit of the Toda people in the Nilgris districts, and a thorough diagnostic study will be carried out to develop the handloom and power-loom sector in the state.
