In an initiative to improve the environment, the Delhi Government will study the environmental impact of units engaged in dyeing or washing of garments and metal surface treatment activities such as electroplating and phosphating.
The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has called for proposals from academic institutions in this regard. Through this study, the State Government will try to know the about the pollution potential and its treatment facilities, its impact on the environment and remedial measures.
Catering to Pan-India, Gandhi Nagar, Tank Road and allied areas like Seelampur, Raghubir Nagar are hubs of unorganised garment manufacturing where thousands of garment manufacturing units are operational.
The study will ascertain how much water is being used by these units and the capacity of the treatment plants and water bodies in their areas.
Activities such as dyeing or washing of jeans and other garments or metal surface treatment include huge water consumption and also have pollution potential.
As per media reports, effluents from these units flow directly into the Yamuna, increasing its pollution load. None of the units have proper system to manage the waste or effluent treatment plants (ETP).
