
In a session today at Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Textiles (I/C), Santosh Kumar Gangwar informed that the Government of India does not set any production target for the textile and garment industry of the country. “Production of textiles and garments is largely in the private sector. Thus, the Government does not prescribe specific production targets to the textile and garmenting industry,” he mentioned.
The Minister also said that the core focus of the Government is on increasing the production in the T&C sector; moreover the data available on production and exports highlight the increasing trend during the past few years. While speaking on the issues faced by textile workers due to current slump in the sector, he said that so far they haven’t received any report related to this.

Gangwar further went on to underline the efforts that the party in power has made to support and strengthen the textile industry of India without harming the interests of workers in the sector. He also pointed out initiatives like schemes for technology upgradation, funds, development of powerloom sector and more, claiming that all these measures are proposed to reinforce the Indian textile and garment sector while creating employment opportunities in the country.
