Walmart has recently announced the acquisition of Israel-based startup Zeekit – a company that allows consumers to virtually ‘try on’ clothing when shopping online.
By leveraging a combination of real-time image processing, deep learning, computer vision and other AI technologies, Zeekit shows clothing shoppers a simulated image that takes into account their body dimensions, fit, size and even the fabric of the garment itself.
Founded in 2013 with the aim to reduce the online clothing’s return rate, Zeekit had been working with a range of retailers and brands prior to the acquisition, including Walmart, Macy’s, Asos, Tommy Hilfiger, adidas and others.
The deal terms have not yet been disclosed; however Walmart has commented that the acquisition will help customers to use the Zeekit technology to virtually try on items from brands including Free People, Champion, Levi Strauss, ELOQUII Elements, Free Assembly, Scoop, Sofia Jeans by Sofia Vergara, plus its own private label brands, like Time and Tru, Terra & Sky, Wonder Nation and George.
Once live, the customers can upload an image of their own or choose from a series of models that best represent their height, shape and skin tone on Walmart’s website in order to see themselves virtually in any item of clothing.
The company further informed that the shoppers would be able to share the simulation with their friends to take their opinion as well, which is an added feature that represents Walmart goes deep to utilise social elements in this technology.
“We’re confident that with the team’s expertise in bringing real-time image technologies, computer vision and artificial intelligence to the world of fashion, we’ll identify even more ways to innovate for our customers in our continued effort to be the first-choice destination for fashion,” said Denise Incandela, EVP of Apparel and Private Brands, Walmart USA.
