It may be hard to believe but it’s true! A garment made of stainless steel, wood and fibreglass evoking the art deco era has won top prize at the World of WearableArt Awards Show. Having a theme of architecture, Nelson-based designer Peter Wakeman’s work Diva’s Dreamscape won the creative excellence section. It’s the third year in a row a New Zealand designer has won the supreme award Founder and judging panel member Dame Suzie Moncrieff says, “Diva’s Dreamscape really is a stunning piece of art, it has a strong simplicity that works perfectly from every angle.”
This year’s runner-up to the supreme award is Xi Zhang, a student from Shanghai’s Donghua University, with her striking garment ‘Deadly Beauty’ made from feathers, beads and mesh cloth. Five designers from the UK claimed four section prizes and two special awards and three designers from the US claimed one section prize and one special award.
