South African fashion retail company, The Foschini Group (TFG), has bought 100 per cent shares in Australian Retail Apparel Group (RAG) which will become its fully-owned subsidiary by the third quarter of this calendar year. It’s worth recalling here that in 2011, private equity group Navis Capital bought 75 per cent of RAG and had been preparing to list it on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). The remaining 25 per cent was owned by founder Stephen Leibowitz and company managers.

Gary Novis will continue as CEO of RAG under the new arrangements after acquisition, together with the existing senior management team. “We enjoyed working with the Navis team and have appreciated their support over the last six years. We are excited to be partnering with The Foschini Group, a pre-eminent retailer in South Africa, UK and Australia, and we look forward to further expanding and enhancing our offering with their support,” commented Novis.

Australia-based Creswick Woollen Mills has obtained a US $ 500,000 grant from the State Government to further improve its goal of fibre tourism with an expanded cafe area, animal viewing facilities and upgraded welcome centre.

The mills strongly focus on attracting Chinese tourists with a specialised sales area and what is being described as “an interactive fibre tourism experience,” where the process of making woollen products is demonstrated and explained.

“Achieving the grant is the end product of three years of consultation with the state government and Regional Development Victoria. With today’s enhancement grant, we will be able to make a much greater space and much more area for our incoming Chinese groups,” averred Boaz Herszfeld, Executive Director, Creswick Woollen Mills.

Minister for Agriculture and Regional Development Jaala Pulford visited the factory on 24th morning to announce the grant. The funding comes as the Creswick Woollen Mills celebrate 70 years of manufacturing. “It’s a journey of textiles, manufacturing and now fibre tourism,” said Pulford.

Herzfeld’s grandfather Paul Ryzowy had built this prosperous business that manufactured electric blankets for Linda and the famous ‘Bluey’ woollen jackets. He would purchase bulk amounts of second-hand woollen clothing which was broken down and used in other garments by his workers. The wool was known as “shoddy”. The darker wool was used up first, leaving the more garish colours to be woven into the wool that was used in the electric blankets, knowing they would not be seen.

Australian fashion brands need to revamp: Ethical Fashion Report

Fashion

According to the 2017 Ethical Fashion Report, 106 apparel companies that sell their products in Australia, consisting of 330 brands, were graded from A to F. As per the Baptist World Aid annual report card, some brands such as Cotton On Group and Kmart have made progress but, notably, nearly three-quarters of the companies that scored a D+ or worse have their headquarters in Australia.

What’s alarming is that only 3 of the 15 brands that scored an A or higher had its headquarters in Australia, and they were niche ethical producers. “If Australia needs to stay competitive in the ethical backing space, then they need to lift their game,” said Gershon Nimbalker, Spokesman, Baptist World Aid. Multinationals like Patagonia and Zara were acclaimed for their practices with both scoring an A grade.

The research showed steady progress towards paying workers a living wage to cover the basics such as food, water and clothing. While only 11% of companies invested towards better wages in 2013, the 2017 report showed a significant 42% rise. It is worth noting that Mighty Good Undies was the only company that could prove that it paid a living wage to all its workers. The report also highlighted that more than three-quarters of the companies, strangely, traced their manufacturing suppliers in the final stage of supply. “If companies don’t know or don’t care who their suppliers are, there is virtually no way for them to ensure that workers’ rights are being upheld throughout their supply chains,” averred Nimbalker.

Several companies, such as Big W, Cotton On Group, Esprit, Jeanswest and RM Williams, have started publishing full supplier lists. 26% of businesses now make that information available, up from 16 per cent in 2016.

Australia debuts in carbon fibre production

Wet Spun Carbon Fibre Plant

Australia is now a home to one of the few carbon fibre production plants in the world with the launch of a new wet spinning line in Geelong city, developed by the Government’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and University of Deakin.

Very few companies are capable of developing their own carbon fibre as it’s labour-intensive and costly. It’s being believed now that this breakthrough set up will help see carbon fibre prices plummet, with developers claiming to have created a lighter and stronger composite at significantly lower costs.

Director of CSIRO Future Industries, Dr. Anita Hill said, “The development was an important milestone. This facility means Australia can carry out research across the whole carbon fibre value chain: from molecules, to polymers, to fibre, to finished composite parts,” adding, “Together with Deakin, we’ve created something that could disrupt the entire carbon fibre manufacturing industry.”

The developers have used a proprietary wet spinning process with precursor chemicals to create strands of fibres thinner than human hair, which are wound onto a spool to create a tape and then carbonised. To do this, the fibres are heated to a very high temperature without coming in contact with oxygen to keep them away from burning. The high temperature causes the atoms in the fibres to vibrate violently until most of the non-carbon atoms are expelled.

90 per cent of the carbon fibres produced in the development process are made from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibres and the remaining 10 per cent are made from rayon or petroleum pitch.
