Tamil Nadu’s textile and apparel industry is in extreme shock with the demise of former Chief Minister of the state and veteran political leader Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi. Nearly all the textile mills, garment factories, and allied units across various hubs of the states like Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode, Salem, and Chennai are closed today in the grief of their loving leader.
Tamil Nadu’s textile industry is grateful to Karunanidhi as he always supported them and worked for them as a CM. “Kalaignar always had a keen interest in the development of Tirupur Knitwear sector as well as Tirupur city. The people of Tirupur are indebted to Kalaignar for upgrading Tirupur municipality into a Corporation and also forming a new district by making Tirupur as its headquarters,” shared Raja M. Shanmugam, President, Tirupur Exporters’ Association (TEA).
He further added, “We remember, because of Kalaignar’s personal intervention, the central government allocated Rs. 200 crore, besides Rs 120 crore help by the Tamil Nadu government to CETPs, at a time when dyeing units were going through existing crisis in Tirupur . SIPCOT, Mudalipalayam was Kalaignar brainchild for the development of industry in Tirupur. TEA’s deepest condolences to Kalaignar family and his party members.”
