Cotton Council International, a US agricultural trade organisation, has advocated for the elimination of the 11 per cent import tax on shorter staple cotton that is shorter than 32 mm. In 2021, the import duty went into force. India gets a significant portion of its cotton from the US. A non-profit organisation dedicated to agricultural trade, CCI exports manufactured cotton goods and American cotton fibre to over 50 nations.
“One of the issues that is a challenge to us is the import duty of about 11 per cent which is applied to the imports of cotton coming from the US,” said Marc A Lewkowitz President and CEO, Supima.
Textile mills, manufacturers, and retailers who use Supima cotton in their products can apply for a licence from Supima to fully utilise the brand. On Wednesday, June 19, CCI, Supima, and other participants will talk about issues of shared interest and map out a course for collaboration with Indian textile producers.
The 10 per cent import fee on Extra Long Staple (ELS) cotton, which has a staple length of more than 32 mm, was eliminated by the Government; however, the 11 per cent charge on imported cotton with a staple length less than 32 mm remains in place.
