
The US has exhilarated its apparel imports. The country noted a 0.90 per cent rise in volume terms during January to August period in 2017.
The largest apparel importer in the world imported 18,030.80 million SME of apparels during the review period as against 17,869.28 million SME in the prior year period.
Furthermore, the US reported a fall in the value of apparels imported by 1.88 per cent on the Y-o-Y basis. The UVR for the January to August period was US $ 2.95 as against US $ 3.03 in the same period last year.
The drop in import value is a great sign for the country as it is spending less amount on imported quantity.
China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Indonesia and India were the top five apparel exporters to the US during the first 8 months of the current year.
Country-wise, China exported apparels (to the US) worth US $ 17.46 billion (down 4.66%); Vietnam US $ 7.67 billion (up 5.64%); Bangladesh US $ 3.50 billion (down 5.64%); Indonesia US $ 3.10 billion (down 4.83%) and India US $ 2.64 billion (up 0.94%), respectively.
The exporting nations dropped unit prices during the reporting period to stay competitive. This has hurt China the most as against quantity surge of 1.80 per cent in apparel exports to the US, the Asian country fell in values by 4.66 per cent on the Y-o-Y basis.
A shift from cotton apparels to MMF apparels can also be seen in the US. Against the decline of 2.7 per cent in imported cotton apparel quantities, the MMF apparels registered a surge of 4.1 per cent on the yearly note.
