UK’s apparel sector seems to be fluctuating as shown by the statistics released by ITC.
During 2021, the apparel imports of the UK valued US $ 20.83 billion, much lower than what it was in 2020 (US $ 22.95 billion) and 2019 (US $ 24.91 billion).
The decline was majorly seen in the shipment values of China that clocked US $ 4.50 billion export revenues from the UK market and plummeted by 28.57 per cent on yearly basis.
The second top exporter to the UK was Bangladesh that shipped US $ 3 billion worth of garments, growing by 7.53 per cent in 2021 over 2020.
India’s shipment stood at US $ 1.09 billion to the UK market in 2021 and that’s a significant increase of 12.37 per cent on Y-o-Y basis.
The shipment values of Sri Lanka and Vietnam almost equaled – US $ 460 million and US $ 457 million, respectively – but none of them could see growth over 2020 values. Vietnam noted a drop of 17.85 per cent, while Sri Lanka fell by 2.12 per cent on Y-o-Y basis.
Though UK’s clothing imports remained sluggish in 2021, the forecast from 2022-2026 is positive. As per Statista, the revenue in the apparel market amounts to US $ 85.83 billion in 2022 and it is expected to grow annually by 3.68 per cent CAGR till 2026.
