Trade between Bangladesh and India has been blocked at Benapole Port since Monday morning, citing security concerns.
Since Monday morning, no commodities have been exported from India to Bangladesh, nor have any trucks entered or exited India. Cargo operations at the port have also been suspended.
Users of Benapole Port claimed that trade between Bangladesh and India via the port had come to a halt. On Monday afternoon, Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country, causing a commotion.
The majority of cargo-handling contractors and labour leaders withdrew from the port, effectively halting all cargo operations.
This has left approximately 2,000 goods-laden trucks delayed at Benapole-Petrapole. This port handles 400-450 imports and 200-250 exports each day on average.
The stranded goods primarily consist of industrial raw materials, chemicals, machinery, and some perishable items, leading to significant financial losses for traders.
They called for the immediate resumption of import-export activities to mitigate these losses.
Sajedur Rahman, general secretary of the Benapole C&F Agent Staff Association, said over fifteen hundred trucks loaded with goods are stuck at Benapole and Petrapole due to the suspension of import-export activities amid security concerns.
He stated that they have met with numerous parties and are hopeful that activities will restart soon.
Rezaul Karim, director of Benapole Land Port, revealed that import-export activities between Bangladesh and India were suspended beginning Monday am due to security concerns. Discussions have been undertaken with the Petrapole Port Manager, and they are confident that trade activities will resume soon.
