Following a five-day closure, export and import operations via the Benapole land port between India and Bangladesh recommenced on Thursday morning. Thousands of vehicles loaded with cargo were spotted at the Benapole and Petrapole port districts, ready to enter both countries.
Kamal Uddin Shimul, vice president of the Benapole C&F Agents Association, said that all types of import-export activities were halted at the country’s largest land port due to the Lok Sabha elections in India, Upazila Parishad elections in Jessore’s Saharsa, and the public holiday for Buddha Purnima.
He added that several sectors and garment factories in the nation have experienced production disruptions as a result of the ongoing five-day import-export stoppage through Benapole port.
This port generates Taka 25 crore in money for the Government every day. He estimated the government lost about Taka 1.25 billion in revenue as a result of the five-day stoppage.
The Lok Sabha elections, according to Azharul Islam, officer-in-charge of Benapole Checkpost Police Immigration, prevented passport-holding tourists from Bangladesh from entering India for three days. The only people who could go were patients and holders of Indian passports.
