According to D Prabhu, Secretary, Texpreneurs Forum, Coimbatore, the textile industry in Tamil Nadu is aiming to move up the value chain and seeking Government’s support for the same. He also stated that the spinning mills in the State account for consumption of 30 per cent of the cotton produced in the whole country. Their share of yarn exports was nearly 60 per cent and accounts for exports of textile goods worth Rs. 75,000 crore a year. The value-added garments’ export was worth Rs. 30,000 crore, and despite its achievements, the industry has been facing several difficulties from the past four to five years like the unprecedented fluctuation in cotton prices and competition from countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh and Vietnam in garment export.
