
Tamil Nadu’s apparel manufacturers are happy as at least on two occasions in the recent past, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wore garments made by Tamil Nadu-based garment companies. With the Prime Minister wearing garments made by Tamil Nadu units twice, the garment industry in the state is getting a lot of attention.
Just a few days ago, a cotton camouflage shirt worn by him during his visit to Bandipur Tiger Reserve was made by Tirupur-based SCM Garments. The pictures and information went viral on social media and have brought Tirupur under the limelight.
Working with many prestigious international brands, SCM Garments is one of the leading companies in Tamil Nadu.
K.M. Subramanian, President, Tirupur Exporters’ Association said that the company supplies such shirts to Decathlon and the apparel was sourced from Decathlon for the Prime Minister.
He further added that though Tirupur is famous for knitted garments, the Prime Minister wearing a garment made in Tirupur has certainly added a feather to their cap.
Two months ago, the Prime Minister wore to the Parliament a jacket made out of recycled PET bottles. The fabric was supplied by Sree Renga Polymers, based out of Karur.
K. Sankar, MD, Sree Renga Polymers said the company had supplied garments made of recycled PET bottles to Indian Oil Corporation. And the IOCL had gifted the fabric to the Prime Minister. It has also given some garments to a G20 delegation recently.
The company is into recycling PET bottles to make textile products for the last 15 years. It started jackets about six months ago and is witnessing good demand for the same.
