During the first five months of 2023, Canada’s total apparel imports were valued at approximately US $ 4.35 billion, as per official custom statistics released by the Canadian Government.
The statistics represent a slight decline of 1.60 per cent compared to the same period in 2022 when imports were valued at approximately US $ 4.42 billion.
The overall decline can be attributed mainly to the substantial drop in knitted apparel imports. However, the woven apparel category saw a significant increase in imports during the same period, which offset some of the overall decline.
The import value of knitted apparel showed a decline of 11.29 per cent, whereas, on the other hand, woven apparel imports saw an upward trend as the data reflects a notable increase of 11.04 per cent from the same period in 2022.
While the overall import of apparels may have decreased over time, there were encouraging developments in May ’23, with imports showing a significant increase on a month-on-month basis (up 24.60 per cent). Nevertheless, when compared to May ’22, there is still a decline of 8.21 per cent.
