The Gujarat rains have caused logistical problems, causing the supply chain of textiles and machinery parts to Indore to be disrupted and commercial vehicle transit times to be at least two days longer.
The unrelenting downpour has impeded the passage of commercial vehicles carrying finished goods and raw materials in both directions, severely impacting the commerce centres of Vadodara and Ahmedabad.
Indore, a well-known centre for fabrics and ready-made clothing, is mostly dependent on the Surat and Ahmedabad textile supplies.
“The dispatches from Surat and Ahmedabad have been delayed due to heavy rains impacting the supply of fabrics. Fortunately, this is not a peak demand period as Raksha Bandhan recently concluded, and Navratri is still weeks away, providing a respite for garment manufacturers,” Maharaja Tukojirao Cloth Market Merchants Association member Arun Vakliwal said.
Textile sector stakeholders have claimed that the shipping of fabrics from Gujarat has been delayed by three to four days.
Transporters claim that owing to the rain, the journey time to Gujarat has been extended by one to two days. “There is no total stop in vehicle movement, even though the rain has lengthened journey times. Even with the delay, vehicles are still leaving and arriving in Gujarat, according to former vice president of the All India Motor Transport Congress (West Zone), Vijay Kalra.
