To oppose the steep hike in the yarn price, Tirupur-based garment manufacturers have decided to close the production for one day, on 15 March (Monday).
This was decided unanimously in the meeting, in which many exporters of the city participated. Various trade associations of Tirupur industry also participated in this meeting.
It is pertinent to mention here that garment exporters of Tirupur are suffering a lot owing to steep hike in yarn price with SMEs being the worst affected of all.
Around 10 per cent of Tirupur’s garment manufacturers have integrated facilities, but rest are severely impacted due to abnormal hike in yarn price. At the same time, supply of the yarn too remains another challenge for all.
Daily production of Tirupur’ garment industry is worth of Rs. 200 crore and it consumes 2.2 million yarn of around Rs. 55 crore per day.
Various apparel trade associations of the city have requested for the voluntary closure of all shops as a moral support to save the industry from this abnormal price hike in yarn and continuous price increase.
The trade associations have requested the industry to join in the town hall, on 15 March, with as many workers, entrepreneurs and professionals as possible, as a rally is being planned to protest.
Time and again, apparel manufacturers have been raising this issue strongly. Just a few days back, Tirupur Exporters’ Association had also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ban cotton yarn and fabric exports temporarily.
Just a week back, K. Subbarayan, MP, Tirupur also wrote a letter to Smriti Irani, Minister of Textiles and urged her to look into the matter.
Team Apparel Resources got to know from confirmed sources that many apparel exporters will be supporting this one-day strike of production.
