Not so long ago in news for vessel congestion that hit country’s exports including apparel shipments, Bangladesh’s principal sea port, the Chittagong Sea Port, is now free of any vessel congestion.
This was claimed by the Chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Chairman Rear Admiral Mohammad Shahjahan, as per media reports, who, reportedly, underlined that export and import activities were going on smoothly and no vessel was waiting for berth at outer anchorage at the port.
Speaking to the media, the CPA Chairman, reportedly, maintained that recently, ships had to wait for zero days in the outer anchorage of the port for several days in a row even as he maintained that compared to when a ship had to wait for eight to ten days to get berthing and 12 or 15 days in some cases, now the number of ships in that list has come down to zero even as import container vessels no longer have to wait day after day at sea for berthing, which saves significant amount of money for domestic and foreign ship owners.
The CPA Chairman, reportedly, credited the installation of new gantry cranes at the port, procurement of new container handling equipment, improved management, automation and increased load-unloading from container vessels as the main reasons behind the improved situation.
