The Meghalaya Government is actively working towards boosting the textile sector of the state with significant advancements. Darshana Vikram Jardosh, Union Minister of State for Textiles, and Textile Minister Paul Lyngdoh recently met to discuss pertinent issues that require central support.
According to Lyngdoh, 90 per cent of the project has been successfully accomplished with the aid of central funding. He further stated that the remaining task involves organising training programmes for weavers and artisans, which is a crucial component of a centrally sponsored project. Emphasising the need for expeditious progress, department heads and district officers have been directed to accelerate the pace of their work.
Highlighting the significance of the textile sector, Lyngdoh expressed the government’s aim to actively involve industry stakeholders, enabling them to access various government schemes and programmes through the department. He also mentioned that the Union Minister assured him of conducting a review every three months to ensure effective progress.
Acknowledging the state’s lag behind other regions in the textile sector, the Cabinet minister admitted that it had long been regarded as a minor department. Expressing disappointment, he lamented the lack of efforts made to promote the sector.
Lyngdoh remarked, “We have successfully identified our areas of weakness and are striving to transform them into strengths.”
He noted that neighbouring states like Assam and Nagaland have outperformed Meghalaya by actively participating in national fairs. Furthermore, he emphasised that these states have effectively showcased their traditionally woven garments in various exhibitions and events.
