In a bid to boost its ‘Make in Maharashtra’ plans and create employment opportunities in the state, the Government of Maharashtra is working on a policy to promote investments in the garment sector.
The policy, being worked out by the state industries department, will stress on setting up garmenting units in the cotton-growing areas of Vidarbha and Marathwada. It will also aim to grant fiscal and non-fiscal incentives like land in areas held by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), grant Floor State Index (FSI) and allot plots for apparel units in the 10 upcoming textile parks (in Maharashtra).
Also, the economic benefits of value-addition to raw cotton will also seep down to the farmers generating direct and indirect employment.

According to a senior state industries department official, the apparel sector is one such that is low on investments but high on manpower. Maharashtra already has a policy for the textile sector, and this niche, sectoral policy for garments will further boost investments.
The initiative is expected to majorly benefit women in the state as the sector has employed the female workers in large numbers.
