
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association or BGMEA, which is the apex garment makers’ body in Bangladesh, has sought support from Germany for continuation of duty benefits in the European Union market for 12 years after LDC graduation even as the President of the garment makers’ body, Faruque Hassan, welcomed the newly-appointed German Ambassador H.E. Achim Tröster and apprised him of the current situation of Bangladesh’s garment industry, its challenges, opportunities as well as the future priorities, recently.
According to a press release, Faruque Hassan sought Germany’s support in this direction when the German envoy called upon him at the BGMEA’s Dhaka-based office, during which the BGMEA President also apprised the German Ambassador of the progress made by the industry in the areas of environmental sustainability, workplace safety and workers’ welfare, even as he requested the envoy to promote the Bangladesh RMG industry positively to his Government, buyers and other relevant stakeholders.
At the meeting, amongst others, were also present BGMEA Vice-Presidents Shahidullah Azim and Miran Ali along with Ms Caren Blume, who is the head of the development section at the German Embassy.
