India’s Khadi & Village Industries Commission (KVIC), the nodal agency for promotion of cluster development for khadi, is planning to increase khadi production capacity by 40 per cent from current 4 million kgs to 5.6 million kgs a year by upgrading its decades old six cotton sliver plants under the Khadi Reform Development Programme (KRDP) this year.
The ‘Khadi Reform and Development Programme’ aims to revitalize the khadi sector with enhanced sustainability of khadi, increased incomes and employment for spinners and weavers, increased artisans’ welfare and achieve synergy with village industries.
The commission is planning to spend about Rs. 35-40 crore on the upgradation of the plants. Upgradation will be commissioned in all the six plants in the first quarter of next financial year.
“We are going to upgrade all six sliver plants in this year to increase the cotton supply to the khadi institutions. Most of the plants are more than three decades old and it is necessary to change technology for better supply,” V K Saxena, Chairman of KVIC was quoted as saying by an English Daily.

It’s not only upgradation, setting up of new silver plants is also under consideration of the commission. “Looking at the rising demand of khadi, we are also considering setting up two new sliver plants. However, it will take some time as detail report is yet to be prepared. With the upgradation of existing plants, the production capacity will increase by 40 per cent,” added KVIC Chairman.
