Writing a new chapter in Bangladesh-India trade relation, the two countries from Sunday started operating container train services that is expected to give a further boost to mutual trade between the two nations.
According to media reports that cited officials of Bangladesh Railway, a train originating from Majerhat-based Container Corporation of India Ltd. (CONCOR) terminal in West Bengal, carrying 50 containers, loaded with fabrics (meant for the readymade garment sector of Bangladesh) and other consumer products, reached Benapole.
The commencement of container train services follows close on heels of a parcel train carrying dry chillies from Andhra Pradesh (in India) reaching Bangladesh.
Also, to be noted in this direction is that the first ship carrying goods from India for the north-eastern part of the country through Bangladesh reached Tripura (in India) recently as part of the transhipment trial run.
As per Bangladesh Railway officials, starting of the container train service followed long-standing demand from business communities from both sides of the border to start container train services that would make cross-border trade organised, hassle-free and faster.
It may be mentioned here that goods and passenger trains have been running between the two countries for long now.
