
Shortages of trucks in Bangladesh are disrupting the transportation of imported goods through the Benapole land port in Jashore from India, a consequence of hartals and blockades orchestrated by opposition parties.
Reports maintained this adding this disruption is inflicting financial losses on businesses and triggering an increase in production costs, as noted by individuals associated with the land port.
Importers are witnessing a significant decline in the clearance of goods-laden Indian trucks at the port, dropping from 450 to 200 per day due to the ongoing scarcity of Bangladeshi trucks responsible for transporting imports to the capital and various districts.
Approximately 1,000 Indian trucks are reportedly awaiting unloading at the port, contributing to the congestion.
Compounding the issue, the truck fare has surged by 60 per cent, escalating from Taka 5,000 to Taka 8,000 per vehicle.
Specifically, the fare on the Benapole-Dhaka route has risen from Taka 17,000 to Taka 18,000, while the fare to Chittagong has jumped from Taka 18,000 to Taka 30,000.
