Four garment makers have suffered losses worth US $ 5.72 million due to the ongoing countrywide blockade. The disclosure comes as BGMEA has started assessing the damage caused to the garment sector by the political turbulence. The loss amount has been calculated on the basis of order cancellations, air shipment fares and discounts to retailers for delayed shipment. Garment makers or their representatives are travelling to Hong Kong, China, India, Thailand and European nations, spending thousands of dollars, to attend the meetings that were supposed to take place in Dhaka. Due to political unrest in 2013, the garment sector had to foot air shipment bills of about US $ 600 million and offer discounts of around US $ 1 billion to retailers.
