Bangladesh’s DBL Group, owing to security concerns consequent to the ongoing conflict between rebels and the Government forces in the Tigray region, has brought back its workers from Ethiopia, where the Group has its manufacturing unit, as per media reports.
The Tigray conflict, reports maintain, is an ongoing armed conflict which started in the Tigray region of Ethiopia in November this year and as the conflict continues to escalate, DBL Group, which closed its factory early November after the clashes erupted, is reportedly not planning to open its Ethiopia-based manufacturing unit anytime soon.
It may be mentioned here that DBL Group with the aim to take advantage of Ethiopia’s duty-free access to the US market, cheap labour and low land prices, established its garment factory in the Tigray region, in 2018.
The company is further said to be planning to develop an industrial park there.
But now with the escalation of the conflict, it has brought back its workers (as many as 101 of the workers were from Bangladesh while two from Sri Lanka) who managed to reach the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa from Tigray with the help of some international agencies after staying trapped for some days there, back home.
