The garment manufacturers in Bangladesh have called upon the Government to make available another stimulus package so as to mitigate the economic fallouts of the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic while also requesting extension of deadline for repaying the initial stimulus of Taka 5,000 crore.
The apex garment makers’ body in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on 7 December (Monday) demanded the fresh stimulus package to help pay workers’ wages for a few more months while underlining the second wave of the pandemic is taking toll on the apparel industry.
Maintaining that the industry is facing a second wave of coronavirus pandemic and exports are going through a negative trend, BGMEA President, Dr. Rubana Huq in a virtual press conference stated, “RMG sector is the driver of the economy as it employs millions. So, to save the sector from collapse and protect workers, we request the Government to provide policy support including a new package.”
The garment makers of the country also reportedly urged the Government to extend the deadline from current 2 years to 5 years, with a one-year grace period, to repay the initial Taka 5,000 crore stimulus from which the industry has so far taken Taka 10,500 crore to pay workers’ wages.
