A long-awaited project of the Chittagong Port, construction of the Bay Terminal, is gaining momentum as Bangladesh Government looks to complete it by 2024 after suffering slowdown owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Media reports maintained this adding State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury underlined his Government has set the timeframe to start operation of the terminal, while interacting with the media, following a recent visit to the project site, accompanied by the senior officials of the ministry and the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Authority.
It may be mentioned here that the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) — Chittagong Port is the main sea port of Bangladesh and is responsible for handling bulk of import and export including all-important apparel shipments — came up with the plan a decade ago and the terminal (talks on the Bay Terminal began in 2011 as the prospect of building a mega container terminal emerged after an 11 km natural island surfaced from the seabed near the Halishahar coast, creating a natural channel for vessel movement) is being constructed on around 2,500 acres of land, with a length of 6.15 kilometres, stretching from the backside of the Chittagong Export Processing Zone to Rasmonighat at the Halishahar coast of the Bay of Bengal.
