Amid a continuous decline in output and a sluggish effort to boost extraction, domestic natural gas production in Bangladesh has reached a decade-low, resulting in a fuel shortage that is impacting various sectors, including slowed industrial production and the shutdown of many gas-fired power plants.
Media reports maintained this citing sources while adding as per official data from state-run Petrobangla, the current average daily natural gas production in Bangladesh is around 2,090 million cubic feet (mmcfd), notably lower than the 2012 average of approximately 2,200 mmcfd.
This represents a 5.26 per cent decrease in overall natural gas production from local fields compared to 2012.
The country’s existing overall natural gas production, including imported liquefied natural gas (LNG), is also below the 2015 levels.
Despite the current production of around 2,591 mmcfd of gas, including 501 mmcfd of re-gasified imported LNG, the overall demand exceeds 4,000mmcfd, creating a substantial shortfall.
