Importers are urged by the Chittagong Port Authority to expedite the delivery of consumer goods, raw materials for the apparel industry, hazardous chemicals, and frozen foods that pass through Chattogram Port.
The administration requested importers to accept deliveries on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in addition to regular working days, to ease the present container congestion at the port.
The port authority’s terminal manager wrote to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, the C&F Agents Association, and the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industries on 12th August, highlighting the urgency of taking immediate action.
The letter emphasises that the port operates around the clock for the discharge of cargo and containers. In different CFS sheds spread throughout its yards, the port was storing 1,226 TEUs of LCL cargo and 37,868 TEUs of FCL containers as on 12th August.
Omar Hazzaz, president of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, told the local media, “To help reduce the container congestion at Chattogram port, we urge the business community to expedite the delivery of their goods. We will relay the port authority’s request to traders. We hope that the situation will return to normal soon.”
