
Canada witnessed a surge in its apparel exports during the first half of 2018. The country posted 4.67 per cent growth in its value-wise apparel imports during January to June period.
The overall import value was worth US $ 4,359.33 million in the said period as against US $ 4,164.73 million import value in the corresponding period last year.
China remained the kingpin in Canadian apparel imports during the period, as the country fetched US $ 1,549.46 million growing marginally by 0.14 per cent on the yearly note. On the other hand, Bangladesh shipped US $ 537.50 million worth of apparels to Canada marking 2 per cent growth on Y-o-Y basis.
Cambodia continued its robust performance as it marked an impressive growth of 12.7 per cent to ship US $ 397.43 million worth of apparels in the Canadian market. In knitted segment, Cambodia stood 2nd after China and exported US $ 285.96 million worth of shipment, registering 9.6 per cent yearly growth.
Further, Vietnam upped its exports from US $ 340.78 million in the same period of 2017 to US $ 390.60 million this year in H1, rising by 14.62 per cent. Canada is one of 11 countries which signed CPTPP trade agreement and Vietnam’s escalation in Canada will further boost once this agreement will get implemented officially in early 2019.
India upped its apparel exports by 3.97 per cent in the first 6 months to Canada and shipped apparels worth US $ 172.82 million. The growth helped India book 5th spot in the top exporters’ list. However, India, with its resources and size of apparel sector, can do much more than what it is doing especially in the Canadian market.
