According to the head of Cambodia’s largest independent garment union, negotiations are officially slated to begin next month for setting the minimum wage of garment factory workers to US $ 177. Leaders of several independent garment-worker unions agreed to push for it and get it implemented from next year.
Labour unions had unsuccessfully campaigned for the same amount, last year too, ultimately settling for US $ 128 a month, an increase of US $ 28 from 2014. Secretary General of the Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia, Ken Loo said that US $ 177 per month is an unreasonable amount and much higher than other competing garment manufacturing countries.
